Regional 9-1-1 Emergency Number Program / 9-1-1 Awareness Week 2007

9-1-1The annual 9-1-1 Awareness Week seeks to educate the public on how to effectivley use 9-1-1 in the event of an emergency. The North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG), the Tarrant County 9-1-1 District, Denco Area 9-1-1 District, and the City of Dallas joined forces to promote the "Know how to use 9-1-1 with the phone you own" campaign.

There are now a variety of phones on the market, including cellular, VoIP/Internet, and phones for kids. We need to understand how these phones work with 9-1-1.

The region was blanketed with television and radio public service announcements in both English and Spanish.

9-1-1 Awareness Week kicked off on September 10, 2007, with a 9-1-1 Kid Hero Awards Presentation and news conference held at the MedStar Headquarters. The Heroes toured the facility, met the dispatchers who took their calls, and were interviewed by local media outlets. Each Hero also received a 9-1-1 Kid Hero medal, t-shirt, certificate, and gift bag.

Destine Barcuch, who is 8 years old and lives in Weatherford Texas, was honored as a Kid Hero for the NCTCOG region. She called 9-1-1 to get medical assistance for her father.

9-1-1 Awareness Week ended with an event to let 9-1-1 Telecommunicators know much we appreciate them. These special people are at the other end of the phone when you dial 9-1-1 and are our lifelines.

An Under the Sea Adventure was held on September 18, 2007, at the City Streets - Atlantis & Blue Monkey Clubs in Fort Worth. Metroplex 9-1-1 Telecommunicators enjoyed fine dining, great music, and dancing.
