Reduce Auto Theft in Texas (RATT) is one of 30 grants being funded for fiscal year 2008 by the Texas Automobile Burglary and Theft Prevention Authority (ABTPA) in Austin to reduce vehicle theft throughout the state.
RATT, a public awareness and auto theft education/prevention program, is housed and administered by the Community Services Department at the North Central Texas Council of Governments in Arlington. The program has been in existence since March 1, 1995. Until then, there had been no coordinated public awareness program designed to inform the public about vehicle theft and demonstrate how one can guard against becoming a victim. ABTPA believes that continued decreases in theft rates may eventually lower insurance premiums for Texans now paying millions of dollars due to the auto theft problem. Therefore, the goal of RATT is to assist local and state agencies in reducing auto theft. RATT focuses on the establishment of statewide public awareness and auto theft prevention programs designed to supplement existing law enforcement and ABTPA projects. A cooperative, coordinated effort will be encouraged among the public and all agencies that may impact auto theft reduction in Texas.
