Closed and Abandoned Municipal Solid Waste Landfill Inventory Update

The North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) is currently conducting an inventory of closed and abandoned landfills located within the north central Texas region. Southwest Texas State University, under a contract with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, TCEQ, (formerly the Texas Natural Resource Conservation Commission), and in cooperation with the 24 regional Council of Governments in the State, has completed an initial statewide identification of closed and abandoned landfills. A total of 623 sites are located within the north central Texas region. Of these sites, 136 were permitted by the State and 487 were unauthorized and are now considered abandoned.

Over the past several years, the NCTCOG has been researching further each of these sites to obtain more detailed information about site location, current land use and ownership. In those cases where exact landfill boundaries can be identified, the county deed records office and the current landowners will be notified of the prior land use of the property for public health and safety reasons. This information as well as site maps will be compiled in the inventory for eventual inclusion in the regional solid waste management plan and will be accessible on the Internet when complete. If you have information on any of these sites please feel free to contact Pat Lambert at NCTCOG at (817) 695-9223 or plambert@nctcog.org.

This inventory is currently unavailable while the database is being renovated. We apologize for the inconvenience.
