Hazard Mitigation Action Planning (HazMAP)

What is HazMAP?

NCTCOG has conducted the initial 2003-2004 planning cycle for Hazard Mitigation Action Planning (HazMAP), and has put into place a framework for coordinated and focused hazard mitigation actions at both the local and regional levels.

Hazard mitigation is defined as the actions taken to reduce or eliminate long-term risk to people and property from hazards and their effects

As a result of the September 7, 2005 HazMAP workshop, the following documents and guidelines are offered to provide assistance and direction to those local jurisdiction participants that are furnishing compiled information and narratives for incorporation under the NCTCOG Multi-Jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan for North Central Texas:

For expanded information and suggestions on mitigation actions, it is recommended that local jurisdictions view the following downloadable document on the GDEM website. [PDF]

Another document on the GDEM website is a FEMA reference that provides examples of community information, narratives and FEMA suggestions for the desired style and detail of narratives for the selected topic areas. FEMA reference [PDF]

NCTCOG staff indicated a schedule for compiling the information needed from the participating jurisdictions, with materials to come to NCTCOG by October 31, 2005. NCTCOG will organize and review the materials provided, and then submit an amended Multi-Jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan to GDEM and FEMA for review.

If you have questions about participation in the Multi-Jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan for North Central Texas or the materials to be furnished to NCTCOG for this planning effort, contact Sam Brush at sbrush@nctcog.org or 817-695-9213.

Hazard Mitigation Action Planning benefits communities because it:

  • Identifies cost-effective and technically feasible mitigation measures that will reduce losses from future disasters
  • Builds partnerships, especially with sectors not previously involved
  • Assesses vulnerability/risk to the community or region
  • Facilitates funding priorities, especially following a disaster
  • Contributes to more sustainable communities
