Storm Water Management

Storm Water

Since 1989 the North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) has been assisting the seven largest cities in the Metroplex and two local districts of the Texas Department of Transportation to comply with storm water regulations issued by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) through a Regional Storm Water Management Program.

Water Quality Management
There are more than 2,400 miles of regional environmental corridors in the North Central Texas region (see map [PDF]). Some of the issues impacting the water quality of these corridors include:

  • Each of our major rivers has sections that do not meet water quality standards due to non-point sources of pollution
  • Storm water runoff from developed areas may cause flooding, stream bank erosion, and pollution of streams and lakes
  • Lack of natural areas with functioning ecological systems in developed areas
  • Increased water supply demands to meet a growing region
