July 2006 Issue

Interagency North Texas Stream Team to hold Seminar

A professional development seminar on Restoration and Management of Riparian Corridors, presented by the Interagency North Texas Stream Team in cooperation with the North Central Texas Council of Governments and Texas Christian University, through support from the United States Environmental Protection Agency, Dunaway Associates, L.P., Huitt-Zollars, and PBS & J. The seminar will be held on August 15, 2006 at the Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas.

The purpose of this seminar is to become familiar with various methods of restoration that are available to address the affect of surface runoff on stream channels and riparian corridors in the urban and open environment. Topics that will be covered throughout the day include, land transformation impacts of streams, stream channel evolution (Fluvial Geomorphology), channel and bank design involving natural and synthetic material for stability and function (Bioengineering/ Soil Bioengineering), and permitting and mitigation associated with the Corps of Engineers regulatory program under Section 404, Clean Water Act.

Stream channel and riparian restoration seeks to improve the water quality in watersheds by controlling pollutants such as erosion and sediment; restoring riparian ecosystems; and returning channels to a more naturally functioning and aesthetically pleasing condition. Indeed, this is a rare and unique opportunity to learn about design methods and procedures that are increasingly gaining attention and favor in the regulatory community.

The Interagency North Texas Stream Team is a non-advocacy, interdisciplinary group of federal, state, and regional government volunteers that provide technical information and advice concerning natural and bio-engineered project design in and around riparian corridors, consistent with Section 404 of the Clean Water Act. The Team is comprised of representatives from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, USDA/Natural Resource Conservation Service, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Texas Parks and Wildlife, Federal Emergency Management Agency, North Central Texas Council of Governments, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and the U.S. Geological Survey.

At this event experts from private industry and government will present topics of mutual interest, offering views solely as a matter of information exchange and learning among practicing professionals. Presentation of their material does not necessarily imply corporate or product endorsement by Stream Team or affiliated Agencies. We look forward to working with you and again we encourage you to pass this information on to anyone who may be interested.
