Trinity River Center Builds Green on a Former Illegal Dumpsite

Trinity River Center

A new Dallas facility located on the site of a former illegal landfill looks to serve as a gateway to the Great Trinity Forest and the southern end of Dallas’ Trinity River Project, as well as a model of best practices in storm water management and energy-efficient buildings. The Trinity River Audubon Center, a signature feature of Dallas’ Trinity River corridor project, is being constructed with the goal of achieving LEED Gold certification. Planned to open in October, the Center will house educational exhibits and meeting and special event facilities, provide access to four miles of trails, and will offer formal and informal educational opportunities. Social Marketing Techniques to Change Attitudes and Behaviors

Upper Trinity Watershed Partners

The Upper Trinity Watershed Partners (UTWP), University of North Texas, North Central Texas Council of Governments, City of Farmers Branch, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will sponsor a series of activities designed to familiarize environmental educators across the North Texas region with the tools and techniqes of social marketing. Social marketing is an effective method for changing the public's attitudes and behaviors concerning initiatives such as recycling, conserving energy, and improving water and air quality. To be held in September and October 2008, the goal of the workshop and charrette is to help build a more effective environmental education capacity in the Upper Trinity River Basin. [more]

The Importance of Multi-Family Recycling

When I was asked to take on writing a story about the importance of multi-family recycling, my first inclination was “run”, because the City of Irving doesn’t have an established “multi-family” recycling program. Then, my brain and interest kicked in because recycling at local apartment complexes is an integral part of the global recycling effort. According to the North Central Texas Council of Governments’ (NCTCOG) 2008 population estimates, approximately 13 percent of the housing in North Central Texas is considered multi-family, which includes structures with three or more units of apartments, townhouses, and condominiums.
