Land Use

The 12-county Dallas-Fort Worth Metropolitan Planning Area (MPA) encompasses over 6 million acres of land. The 2005 Land Use Inventory describes how this land is utilized. Each section of land in the MPA (Collin, Dallas, Denton, Ellis, Hood, Hunt, Johnson, Kaufman, Parker, Rockwall, Tarrant and Wise counties) is classified into one of 25 categories. The data are available through interactive query or as downloadable GIS data.

Historical Land Use

Historical land use data are available for select areas of the North Central Texas region. The extent of coverage varies by year. Changes in methodologies over the years have resulted in reclassifications of some areas, so direct comparisons of data for some years are not recommended. Historical land use data are available as reports or downloadable GIS data.
