The SmartWaySM Transport Partnership (SmartWay), established by the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in 2004, is a voluntary, public-private partnership with the ground freight industry. Truck and rail freight is integral to the nation’s economy; however, heavy-duty diesel vehicles are major consumers of fossil fuels and contributors to air pollution. SmartWay promotes various strategies which reduce energy consumption and vehicle emissions while also
saving money for truck and rail freight operators.
The North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) is partnering with EPA to support the SmartWay initiative in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and officially joined the program as a SmartWay Affiliate in October 2006. NCTCOG is currently conducting a SmartWay Upgrade Kit Demonstration Project in partnership with two trucking companies that will evaluate the effectiveness of advanced technologies in increasing fuel efficiency and reducing emissions from heavy duty diesel vehicles. The two companies participating in the project, Roehl Transport, Inc. and Sagebrush Logistics, LLC, were selected as project partners through the SmartWay Upgrade Kit Call for Projects conducted in early 2007.
In addition to the SmartWay Upgrade Kit Demonstration Project, the NCTCOG hopes to work with local truck dealers and manufacturers to promote the sale of heavy duty diesel trucks that have already been outfitted with devices that increase fuel economy, reduce idling, and reduce emissions. NCTCOG will also work to promote participation in the partnership among companies that operate in the North Central Texas area. Many businesses in the region are already participating. The EPA maintains a full list of current SmartWay Partners.
The following members of the Regional Transportation Council’s Intermodal, Freight, and Safety Subcommittee have already demonstrated a commitment to the goals of the SmartWay Program by joining as SmartWay Partners:
Burlington Northern Santa Fe
Lisa Motor Lines
Texas Department of Transportation
Union Pacific Railroad
United Parcel Service
