The North Central Texas Regional ITS Architecture provides a starting point for project definition. It provides an overall framework that shows how various types of projects will integrate with each other and with existing systems. This page lists all the identified types of ITS projects that have been mapped to the North Central Texas Regional ITS Architecture. Note that the projects as defined int he architecture do not directly reflect specific deployment projects, and their inclusion here does not imply that funding has been made available or a commitment by stakeholders has been made. The projects here provide a framework for North Central Texas Region stakeholders to use in defining their specific projects.

Arterial Road Weather Information ImprovementsMedium-term This project will improve road and weather condition information collection and dissemination for agencies managing arterial traffic. The project includes: - weather monitors. - pavement condition monitors. - weather forecasting and analysis. - weather information distribution. - road-weather information dissemination.
Arterial Signal Preemption ImprovementsNear-term This project will implement signal preemption for emergency vehicles on local roads. Emergency vehicles will be able to request a signal preemption and local signals would have the ability to grant it. The project also provides emergency veiclke tracking.
Arterial Smart Workzones ImprovementsMedium-term This project will provide improved workzone management through: - coordination between traffic management and maintenance and construction management. - workzone roadway devices such as portable cameras, Dynamic Message Signs and speed warning signs - automated gates and barriers under the control of the centers and mainteance vehicles.
Arterial Traffic and Incident Monitoring ImprovementsNear-term This project represents improved monitoring of traffic managed by multiple agencies. It may include: - additional sensors and CCTV systems that allow local agencies to observe conditions in real time. - incident detection systems. - coordinated response and management among emegerncy, construction and traffic agencies. - automated incident response systems
Arterial Traffic Information Dissemination ImprovementsNear-term This project represents the increased use of Dynamic Message Signs, Highway Advisory Radios and the media to alert the traveling public to traffic conditions by local traffic management agencies.
Arterial Traffic Signal Control ImprovementsNear-term This project represents upgrades to local traffic signal systems, including: - updated controllers and management software. - advanced traffic strategies such as coordination, adaptive control and system monitoring. - advacned traffic analytics and traffic decision support For some agencies, the system may include monitoring and managing railroad grade crossings.
Integrated Corridor ManagementExisting The Dallas ICM Pioneer Site provides integrated management of freeway, arterial, transit, and parking systems within a corridor. It applies management of the corridor as a system, rather than the traditional approach of managing individual assets.
Public / Private Provider Transit ImprovementsNear-term This project represents multiple transit improvements that have been indicated as planned by local transit providers It includes: - tracking transit vehicles to improve safety and schedule adherence. - improving in-vehicle security through systems such as silent alarms and cameras. - improving transit information through real-time arrival information. In addition, some local agencies indicated plans to implement transit signal priority, which typically allows transit vehicles to request early or extended green lights to improve their schedule adherence.
Regional Connected VehiclesLong-term This project represents the region's plans to support localized Vehicle-to-Vehicle, Vehicle-to-Infrastructure and Vehicle-to-Device Systems to improve safety, mobility and environmental applications using Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC) using 80211.p and other wireless technologies. This project is focused on the interaction of vehicles with TxDOT systems.
Regional Drone Traffic MonitoringMedium-term This project uses drone-type unmanned flying devices to hover over roadways in order to capture traffic images and transmit them back to a traffic management center. Drones would be under the control of traffic management center staff. Applications may include arterial freeway images.
Regional Emergency ResponseLong-term This project will provide improved information sharing and emergency response management among the region's emergency responders, emergency vehicles and trauma centers who will treat injured people. The project improves the routing and response time for emergency vehicles and enhnaces the exchange of information among emergency management centers, emegency vehicles and the care facilities where injured people will be taken.
Regional Parking Management ImprovementsMedium-term This project represents multiple agencies indicating a plan to implement parking management strategies. Parking management strategies include: - collecting and sharing parking facility status such as space availability and fees. - coordinating parking information at a wide area level. - collecting and managing of parking fees.
Regional Transportation Information Coordination ImprovementsMedium-term This project would develop a regional data mart that collects traffic and transportation information from the region's agencies and shares it on a region-wide basis. This project is dependent upon local upgrades in traffic systems and monitoring to ensure accurate data sources. The project would require a lead agency to own the data mart, and region-wide agreements on the type of data collected and shared. Data can include: " traffic control plans " traffic data " surveillance data (e.g. camera images) " incident and incident response information " maintenance and construction plans " transit operations data " event information
Regional Traveler Information ImprovementsLong-term This project would develop enhanced regional traveler information by increasing the amount of information integrated by the region and shared with the public. This project would be dependent upon Regional Transportation Information Coordination that would centralized and standardize information from multiple agencies.
TxDOT Freeway Management ImprovementsLong-term This project is intended to improve traffic flow on freeways through such activities as: - ramp metering. - managing HOV lanes. - control of dynamic lanes, such as reversible lanes and temporary use of shoulders. - wrong-way driver detection and warning. - increased traffic information dissemination. - dynamic speed limit.
TxDOT Maintenance ImprovementsMedium-term This project is intended to improve maintenance and construction management for TxDOT in the Dallas-Fort Worth region. The project includes: - maintenance and construction management strategies. - maintenance and construction fleet management. - improved workzone safety and management.
