The North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) has partnered with Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART), Denton County Transportation Authority (DCTA), Fort Worth Transportation Authority (FWTA), and Trinity Railway Express(TRE) in conducting two types of transit travel surveys in 2014.
The goals are to determine how residents are using the expanding transit system and what changes could be made in the future to better accommodate the needs of our continuously growing region.
The first type of survey will be a stop-to-stop survey that would assist with understanding passengers’ trip patterns on each bus route and rail line. On bus trips being surveyed, passengers will be simply provided a card when they board the bus, and asked to return it when they get off the bus. On rail trips being surveyed, passengers will only be asked upon boarding what station they will be getting off the train.
The second type of survey will be a questionnaire. Randomly selected passengers will be asked a set of questions about their current transit trip and their demographic characteristics. In most cases, this will occur through an interview by the surveyors. In other cases, the passenger will be asked to fill out a paper questionnaire. Both survey formats will contain the same questions.
The answers to these questions will provide information about how transit services are used and where the demand is throughout the transit system. The survey information will also allow planners to better serve the passengers’ needs.
Following our successful surveys of DART/TRE this past spring, the transit surveys will be continuing this fall to get a complete picture of the transit system use in the region.
- August 25 – September 25: Questionnaire/Interview surveys will be conducted on DART and the TRE.
- September: On-to-Off surveys will be conducted on DCTA, UNT Shuttles, A-Train, and FWTA.
- October-November: Questionnaire/Interview surveys will be conducted on DCTA, UNT Shuttles, A-Train, and FWTA.
