Access North Texas Key

Ellis County

The purpose of Access North Texas is to build partnerships and better coordinate the delivery of transportation services throughout the region.  This can only be accomplished by hearing from you.  In the near future a kick-off meeting will be held, followed by a county-specific meeting in the fall of 2016.  These discussions will allow us to focus our efforts on coordinating service and increasing efficiencies in public and human service transportation, therefore allowing us to better serve older adults, people with disabilities, low-income individuals and other groups with transportation challenges.

In 2013 we learned that Ellis County, a predominantly rural county located in the southern part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area, has transportation needs that are not currently addressed.  Community outreach and survey results indicated that the following key strategies be implemented:

  • Improve public awareness of existing services,
  • Incorporate additional strategies such as creating language-specific marketing,
  • Expand service to youth, and
  • Providing a ride for those traveling to Veterans Affairs services in Dallas.

The population is projected to increase another 70% to 250,000 by 2035.  Existing public transportation service is limited to weekday demand response service.  While the number of commuters traveling to and from Ellis County continues to grow, transit options are limited for most residents and it has been difficult to measure whether the diverse needs of the county are being met.

As we summarize the public transportation needs of today, we request your specific insight.  How has the region changed?  What new challenges are before us?  Have past struggles been overcome?

To summarize the needs of this community we request input from advocates, public transportation providers, human service agencies, aging and workforce partners, and involved community members.  We welcome you to join us at future events throughout the 16-county region over the next year.  Information about transportation needs and gaps in service as well as strategies that leverage resources and build on coordination efforts already underway will be incorporated into the Access North Texas planning document.

More information will be posted on this web page as it becomes available.
