Rail North Texas is the regional initiative to identify funding for an additional 251 miles of passenger rail to meet residents’ transportation needs as well as the region’s air quality goals. Involvement and support of local elected officials, business leaders and the public is important to refining, funding and implementing a regional passenger rail expansion. The additional 251 miles of rail reach across seven counties, and the expansion is included in Mobility 2030 which is the long-range, multimodal Metropolitan Transportation Plan for North Texas.

Collaborative Plan for Funding Rail Expansion
During the last year, local elected officials, transportation planners and partners, business leaders and the public evaluated potential revenue sources to fund the rail expansion. A local consensus was developed and presented to the North Texas legislative delegation for consideration during the 81st Session of the Texas Legislature.

Prior to Rail North Texas, several other initiatives sought to identify funding for regional rail. A timeline and background information outline studies and work which preceded Rail North Texas in the multi-year effort to expand passenger rail.

Texas Local Option Transportation Act (TLOT) Introduced in Texas Legislature
Bills filed in both houses of the Legislature could provide funding for the rail expansion. Known now as the Texas Local Option Transportation Act (TLOT), SB 855 and HB 9 developed from the region's Rail North Texas plan. Senator John Carona and Representative Vickie Truitt introduced the bills.
