COVID-19 Update

NCTCOG’s Area Agency on Aging (AAA) and Aging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC), serving the 14 counties surrounding but not including Dallas and Tarrant, are monitoring the COVID-19 related needs of older adults, persons with disabilities, and their family caregivers.  As permitted by our primary funding source, the Texas Health and Human Services Commission, we are expanding current services and adding new services to respond to regional needs.  Go to or updates or contact Doni Green at

Following are some of the services that have been affected by COVID-19:

  • Congregate Meals:  Nearly all congregate meal sites in North Central Texas have closed due to COVID-19.  Congregate meal providers have the ability to provide participants with meals that they can eat at home, subject to the availability of funds. 

  • Home-Delivered Meals:  The home-delivered meal program has faced unprecedented demand as older adults have had to shelter at home and contend with shortages at local grocery stores.  As a result, many local programs have had to start wait lists.  Fortunately, additional funding for home-delivered meals will be available through recent federal legislation.  Meal providers will use these funds to reduce waiting lists.Older adults do not need to be homebound (i.e., have significant functional impairment) in order to qualify for emergency meal funding.

  • Preventive Health Workshops:  The North Central Texas Area Agency on Aging has had to suspend all face-to-face workshops until further notice.  It is offering its Chronic Disease Self-Management, Diabetes Self-Management, and Chronic Pain Self-Management workshops by telephone and/or Zoom.

  • Benefits Counseling:  Staff and other certified Benefits Counselors have suspended local clinics and group presentations. They continue to help Medicare beneficiaries and older adults understand their public and private benefits and protect their rights.

  • Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program:  Staff and volunteer ombudsmen are limiting physical contact with residents.  Ombudsmen continue to advocate for residents by providing help over the phone or through videoconferencing technology.

  • Nursing Home Relocation Program:  Staff and contract relocation specialists are limiting physical contact with residents.  They continue to assist nursing home residents who wish to relocate with telephonic support.

  • Aging and Disability Resource Center:  Staff have suspended participation in satellite clinics and will reevaluate in January 2021.  They continue to assist persons with disabilities in accessing long-term services and supports by providing help over the phone.

Following are some of the services that have not been affected by COVID-19:

  • Care Coordination and Caregiver Support Coordination:  Staff case managers continue to provide short-term support to older adults who are at risk of premature institutionalization and their family caregivers.  They continue to authorize in-home services, subject to the availability of providers.
