Roadway Corridor Projects

What is a Major Transportation Corridor Study?

Major Transportation Corridor Studies, also known as Major Investment Studies (MIS), are a critical step in the comprehensive metropolitan transportation system planning process undertaken by the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) in partnership with area transportation providers and local governments. Under federal metropolitan planning regulations, these corridor studies are required to support decisions on substantial transportation investments. These corridors are evaluated from both local and regional perspectives, and proposed recommendations may include enhancements to existing freeways, toll roads, high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes, managed lanes, and rail transit facilities, as well as new construction of such facilities. This process also serves as a bridge between the regional planning process and the more detailed project environmental approval and engineering phases. There are many cooperative parties involved with the North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) in the MIS process. In the North Texas region, these partner transportation agencies include, but are not limited to, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART), Trinity Metro, and the North Texas Tollway Authority (NTTA).

The results of these studies are incorporated into the Metropolitan Transportation Plan as appropriate.
